Samoshel
Samoshel is a 110 bed shelter for the homeless located at 505 Olympic Blvd. in Santa Monica. Prior to 2005, Samoshel was a Salvation Army program but is now supported by OPCC. Samoshel shelter, under OPCC, offers emergency and transitional housing, provides 12 step meetings, housing referrals and employment assistance. St. Monica's volunteers cook and serve a meal once a month for the clients of Samoshel. They recently added a kitchen to the premise so we can now cook and serve meals on site. Prior to the kitchen being built, the only hot meals they received were those prepared off site by other church or synagogue volunteers. The clients of Samoshel have agreed to be off drugs and alcohol in order to enter into the shelter and receive all the benefits and assistance OPCC has to offer.
We cook and serve a hot meal on the 2nd Sunday of the month. We need 8-9 volunteers each month from 12:30 to 5:15 pm. Because clients are very grateful and extremely appreciative of our efforts, you will find this a very meaningful volunteer opportunity. In addition to needing volunteers to assist the lead cook, we are looking for people who would like to plan a menu, shop and lead the volunteers whether once a year or more frequently.
To get involved, please contact Patricia Keller, Evenings at 310-271-4533, Days at 310-278-2300 or via E-mail. If you use e-mail and because I won't recognize your e-mail address, please mention Samoshel or volunteer opportunity in the subject line.
