Choirs and Music

Music is an integral part of every liturgical celebration at St. Monica. Time and again visitors to St. Monica comment that the music has moved them beyond any previous liturgical experience. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has published several instructions since Vatican II on the place and preparation of music for the Sacred Liturgy. The most recent statement is entitled: Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship published in 2007.

Each of our Liturgies has a unique character and speaks to people with varying taste in music, from very traditional music to very contemporary music.

This Liturgy has great music from our tradition and is led by Gary Denk with our organist. It has a more reflective feel than some of our more contemporary services.

9:30 a.m. Sunday Liturgy – The Family Mass

The 9:30 Liturgy is sometimes called our “family” Mass. Families and people of all ages attend and are uplifted by music and liturgy under the direction of Eric and Julie Becker. At this Liturgy, a special Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered as well as child care services in the upper Duval Center.

11:30 a.m. Sunday Liturgy – St. Cecelia Choir

This liturgy has a more traditional feel, with the choir accompanied in most cases with the organ. Music is chosen from the vast tradition of the Church’s musical heritage and includes both metrical hymns and polyphony from the renaissance period to contemporary.

1:15 p.m. Sunday Liturgy – Teen Liturgy

This Liturgy is led musically by the group Monica’s Joy under the direction of Ed Archer. The group is composed of high school and college age students who come together to make great music and lift the community’s heart, mind and soul to the Lord.
