Hello and welcome. On these pages we would like to introduce ourselves and answer whatever questions you might have about St. Monica Elementary School.

about us

St. Monica Elementary School is a Catholic, parochial school in Santa Monica. It was formally opened in 1930 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. In 1975 the sisters withdrew because of a personnel shortage and an all-lay faculty and staff took over to continue the good work of Catholic education begun by the Holy Name Sisters. Since its founding in 1930, the school has continued to improve and enrich its educational program and facility, which currently includes ten renovated classrooms, two full service libraries, two state-of-the-art computer labs. A large auditorium and a youth center for school and parish use, administrative and counseling offices, and a teacher and parent workroom.

Grades K - 6 are self-contained classrooms, with students receiving specialized instruction in Computer Science, Music and P.E. Grades 7 - 8 are departmentalized for all classes except Homeroom and Art. All students receive instruction in Religion, Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, as well as in Computer Science, Music, art, Physical Education, Substance Abuse Prevention and Aids Education.

sense of community

St. Monica Elementary School provides an atmosphere which is safe, peaceful and conducive to learning. There is also a sense of community evident at the school wherein students, faculty and parents alike experience a positive, welcoming and safe environment. We pride ourselves on our family spirit. This is often the thing that new parents and students comment on most after being here awhile. Our students and parents experience a sense of belonging, a nurturing environment in which they can grow, and wherein they feel respected, cared for, and supported. Not all schools provide this vital dimension for children; at St. Monica Elemenatary School, we definitely do! A key component of this sense of community is our School Families program, which creates a family spirit at school, bridges the grade level gaps, and fosters leadership among our older students.

recognizing individual needs and talents

At St. Monica Elementary School, our children are valued and respected for who they are and how they learn. We seek to educate the whole child, and prepare him or her to live responsibly, morally and effectively in today's society. We strive to provide for each child's spiritual, intellectual, psychological, social and physical growth and development. Our school is a microcosm of the world: our student body is diverse in terms of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds, and our kids get along; they respect each other, and they are friends to each other--of course, we have great kids!
