Monday Night Volleyball Returns

Summer has begun with the return of Monday Night Volleyball every Monday at 6 pm at Lifeguard Station #25 right there on the beach, north of where Ocean Park meets the Pacific Ocean (Google Maps). Look for us just north of the kiddie playground in front of Perry’s Pizza and Rentals.

A St. Monica tradition, Monday Night Volleyball has attracted anywhere from 50 to 100 adults to gather in fellowship and fun down at the beach for over 20 years. Every other weekend a potluck is held and participants are encouraged to bring their favorite dishes. It doesn’t matter what level you are… this is purely social, summer fun. We provide the nets and balls. You just show up!

All those playing must adhere to guidelines presented for fair play and access to courts as well as to instructions from parish coordinators. The parking lot close to us is free at 6 pm. Bring water or soda to drink. Absolutely no alcohol.

Contact Info. For more info contact our coordinators: Gerard at (310) 430-0101, Eddie at (310) 452-9049 or Idalia at (310) 936-7962. You can also email them at stmonicavball@yahoo.com.

New Summer Mass Schedule

As Msgr. Torgerson is announcing throughout this weekend, there will be a change in our Sunday Mass Schedule for the summer months. This is due to a number of changes this summer, including the departure of Fr. Ben and Fr. Dennis and the arrival of just one new priest, Fr. Leszek. We will be combining the 6:45 am and 7:45 am liturgies into one Eucharistic Liturgy at 7:30 am, beginning on Sunday, July 8. This summer schedule will be in eff ect throughout the rest of July and the entire month of August. We thank you for your understanding during this period of transition.

Farewell to Our Visitors from Holy Cross, Dandora

We would like to take this time to thank Father Andrew Massawe, Anne Karuku, and Charles Atula for bringing the joy of our sister parish to St. Monica during the last three weeks.

Anne Karuku and Charles Atula returned home this week after a wonderful three-week visit. They are a great blessing to us and it was wonderful having them among us. Fr. Andrew Massawe headed to Notre Dame University to meet with members of his community. He will be returning to St. Monica for a few days at the end of July and will celebrate Mass with us on Sunday, July 29, before returning to Dandora. Our visitors were able to experience many of our ministries at St. Monica as well as to enjoy Southern California.

Keep in mind that throughout the year, our Holy Cross Africa Ministry provides opportunities for parishioners to be involved in our ongoing work with our sister parish. Watch for announcements regarding future committee meetings or contact our chairs of the ministry. If you would like to contact our visitors from Dandora personally in the future, our ministry can provide contact information for you.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Congratulations to those honored last week with the David Hines Volunteer Award! We have six very deserving honorees: Tegan Amendolare, John Burnes, Joe Christian, Steve and Mona Crear (posthumously), and Nancy Dewey. All of these wonderful people have contributed their time and talent for many years to St. Monica Catholic Community, and in ministries that have reached out to the local community. We had close to 500 people attend the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. It was a wonderful night to celebrate the great effort of the volunteers of our community. We are so grateful and blessed by the great gifts that you share so generously with us as a family. Congratulations!
