St. Monica alumnus Doug O'Neill - winning trainer of 138th Kentucky Derby

Southern California-based horse trainer and St. Monica alumnus Doug O'Neill recorded his first Kentucky Derby training victory on Saturday, May 5th with an impressive performance by I'll Have Another in the 138th running of the race. O'Neill has trained the 3 year-old colt for his previous 5 races prior to entering the Kentucky Derby as the 15-1 longshot. "I'll Have Another" waited for the perfect time down the stretch to pass the frontrunner as the record crowd on-hand, and the excited trainer, looked on. With ten local training titles at Hollywood Park, Doug O'Neill can now add the Kentucky Derby to his list of storied accomplishments.

Up next for trainer Doug O'Neill and Derby champion I'll Have Another will be the Preakness Stakes on May 19th, the second leg of horse racing's triple crown.

Congratulations Doug on your great accomplishment!

Fore! Our Kids and Scholarships

The annual SMCHS Golf Classic was a major success!  Thanks to all friends of SMCHS who came out and golfed for a worthy cause. We were able to raise significant funds for our need-based financial aid program.  We are already looking forward to next year's event!

Geometry Project Takes Students To Another Dimension

Like a scene from a sci-fi film, students in Ms. Rita Morgan’s geometry classes were challenged to “enlarge” or “shrink” a three-dimensional object. In their study of ratios, students were charged with creating a model of an existing object.  Students captured past and present as they selected objects such as a Rubix Cube, an iPod, and even a Hershey Kiss!  The students presented their “shrunken” or “giant” models in class.  The classroom was filled with colorful, unique representations of some common and not-so-common objects.   This innovative lesson was a great way to engage students in a cross-disciplinary project. Students used fine art and geometry for this assignment and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
